Ginger is part of the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes turmeric and cardamom. It is actually a rhizome, not a root, i.e. an underground stem.

Ginger is one of the most well-known and useful plants in the world that has been used for centuries as a spice for flavoring food and as a medicinal plant.

Depending on the variety, the flesh of the ginger rhizome can be yellow, white or red in color.

There are many health benefits associated with ginger:

1. Fights Germs - Certain chemical compounds in fresh ginger help your body get rid of germs. It is particularly good at stopping the growth of bacteria such as E.coli and shigella, and can also keep viruses such as RSV at bay.

2. Keeps your mouth healthy - Ginger's antibacterial power can also brighten your smile. The active compounds of ginger prevent the growth of oral bacteria. These bacteria are the same ones that can cause periodontal disease, a serious infection of the gums.

3. Soothes Nausea - Ginger helps if you're trying to ease a tired stomach, especially during pregnancy. It can work by breaking up and getting rid of the accumulated gas in your intestines. It can also help treat nausea or vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

4. Eases Arthritis Symptoms - Ginger is anti-inflammatory, meaning it reduces swelling. This can be particularly helpful in treating the symptoms of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Pain and swelling may be relieved by either taking ginger by mouth or using a ginger compress or patch on your skin.

5. Relieves Period Pains - Do you have period cramps? Ginger powder can help. In studies, women who took 1,500 milligrams of ginger powder once a day for 3 days during their cycle experienced less pain than women who did not.

6. Relieves Indigestion – If you live with chronic indigestion, ginger could bring some relief. Ginger before meals can make your system empty faster, leaving less time for food to sit around and cause problems.
